“I am European and our cinema comes from a different ground. American Cinema is about the genre, invited the genres. And there’s a sense of exhausted need of creating boxes for movies to genre. There’s also the new Hollywood who also contaminated genres. You had the masterpieces. You can say that it’s a horror movie but it’s a comedy. Things still keep on moving still with boundaries of genre or a category. And then among the rooster of the classic genre – the musical, the western, the war, the drama, the noir , the horror the fantasy we started to have more genre. To the degree that there’s also the “indie movie” genre, then the gay movie genre. And within the gay movie genre, there’s different genre of movies.”

I’m not asking myself to  fill the box. I am asking myself to tell the best way possible a story that I love, and characters that I’m completely in love with. – Luca Guadagnino

“This is foreign to me as a film maker because I am coming from a different ground, and movies are movies. I’ve been experiencing as an audience – films goes from this side to that side, and fascinated by both but in a way I’m a filmmaker that comes from the European canon. Where I’m not asking myself to  fill the box. I am asking myself to tell the best way possible a story that I love, and characters that I’m completely in love with.”
